IBVTA statement on reports of age restricted products and illicit drugs being used to exploit minors
The IBVTA is appalled to hear of these monstrous crimes, which go far beyond illegal sales of vapes to under 18s. Law abiding vape store owners will of course have sympathy for the victims, and will be continuing to report stores they believe to be operating illegally to the authorities.
We see this as yet another scourge on the vape sector. At the same time it is a distraction from the only purpose where vapes should be used, for adults that would otherwise be smoking.
Many IBVTA members already employ retail staff after Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks have been satisfactorily completed. Following these revelations, we believe DBS checks for all retail staff may need to become a condition for vape shop licensing, which will be introduced following the upcoming passing of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
